Faculty and Student Observation and Participation

Observers

Children's Campus provides opportunities for SF State students and faculty to observe children ages 6 months through 5 years. Observers are placed in one of our 5 dedicated observation rooms and will have no direct contact with children. Faculty intending to send their students to the Children's Campus must initially contact the Interim Director, Itza Gonzalez Once registered in the system, faculty can register course/s and students each semester through the Observation System using their SF State ID and password. Students will not be allowed to sign-up for an observation until faculty has registered their course and students. Faculty and students are encouraged to read the Guidelines for Observation at Children's Campus

​Participants (inside the classroom)

Children's Campus provides opportunities for SF State students and faculty to participate in the classroom with children ages 6 months through 5 years. If direct participation in the classroom is required by their coursework, the student must comply with California Community Care Licensing (CCL) requirements for volunteers. Those requirements are detailed in the Guidelines for Participants below. Faculty intending to send their students to the Children's Campus must initially contact the Interim Director Itza Gonzalez. Once registered in the system, faculty can register course/s and students each semester through the Observation System using their SF State ID and password. Students will not be allowed to sign-up to participate until faculty has registered their course and students. Volunteers

To qualify as a volunteer you must comply with California Community Care Licensing (CCL) requirements for volunteers. Students interested in volunteering should read the guidelines for volunteers below. If you are interested in volunteering at Children's Campus please email the Interim Assistant Director at grivas@sfsu.edu and tell us about yourself and why you are interested in volunteering at Children's Campus. Volunteers will be accepted at the discretion of Children's Campus administration.

Student Internships

Internships that are SF State academic requirements are arranged directly with the Interim Director, Itza Gonzalez. Currently, students from the Child and Adolescent Development (CAD) and Consumer and Family Studies (CFS) Departments complete internships at the Children's Campus each semester. In addition, students studying child development at City College San Francisco are able to complete internships at Children's Campus, space permitting.

Teaching Fellow

Teaching Fellows spend one year training at the Children's Campus under the direct supervision and mentorship of the Director. Fellows work a full schedule and become integral members of our highly experienced teaching team. Applicants for the Fellowship must be enrolled in a graduate program focusing on Early Childhood, have relevant teaching experience and be interested in further developing their knowledge of early childhood and skills as early childhood educators. Student Employment

Children's Campus hires SF State students to work as Teacher Assistants and Substitute Teachers every semester. Students interested in working at Children's Campus can submit a job application at any time; however most student hiring occurs in August, December and May. Full-Time Employment

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Director, the Head Teacher is responsible for providing high-quality, responsive, and enriching caregiving and education that is in alignment with the Children’s Campus philosophy and mission. The incumbent plans and implements an environment that is rich with relational experiences and hands-on inquiry experiences designed to support the development of a range of social, emotional, self-help, language, literacy, cognitive and motor skills for individuals and groups of children that are aligned with the California State Foundations for Early Learning (Infant, Toddler, and Preschool). The Head Teacher engages in a highly reflective teaching practice that is grounded in child observation and documentation, which informs the planning of learning experiences and the learning environment. The incumbent mentors and trains other classroom staffing including Teachers, Teacher Assistants, and SF State students.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Educational Background: A bachelor’s degree or higher level of education in child development or early childhood education is preferred. Consistent with the State Child Development Permit Matrix, incumbents who do not possess a degree must have completed at least 24 units in child development or early childhood education, six specialization units, required adult supervision units, and the additional general education requirements. Some centers may require possession of a teaching permit to the program.
  • Knowledge: Demonstrated knowledge and competence to develop, plan and implement a curriculum for early childhood education is required. Must be knowledgeable in pertinent state and federal regulations relating to the daily operations of an early childhood education center including licensing regulations, education regulations, child abuse reporting requirements, and public health and sanitation codes and requirements.
  • Experience: Consistent with the state Child Development Permit Matrix, incumbents who possess a bachelor’s degree or higher must have completed the required units of supervised field experience. Incumbents without a degree must meet the specified days of experience within the last four years. This is equivalent roughly to one to two years of experience, including one year of experience providing teacher/staff supervision.
  • Additional Requirements: Incumbents are required to pass a health screenings and background checks consistent with state requirements for working in centers for early education. In addition, some incumbents may be required to maintain certification in pediatric CPR and standard first aid practices and meet additional state requirements.
